Precaution Still Matters in Planning
An appeal against the refusal of a proposed mobile phone mast in New Quay has been dismissed, a welcome win for local residents who described the structure as an “eyesore” and raised serious concerns about its siting in a residential area.
Residents objected on multiple grounds including visual impact, overbearing scale, lack of consultation, harm to local amenity and tourism, and potential effects on human health. This case shows that planning decisions do not have to ignore community wellbeing or simply defer to industry assurances.
At a time when long-term, involuntary exposure to wireless radiation remains scientifically contested, this decision reflects the importance of the Precautionary Principle, especially where people live, sleep, and raise families.
Communities are entitled to say no to poorly sited infrastructure. Planning inspectors can consider more than just coverage claims. Local character, health, and quality of life still matter.
Call to action
If a mast or wireless installation is proposed near your home, school, or workplace get informed, get organised, and object where appropriate. Demand proper consultation, safer siting, and planning decisions that put people before profit.
This case shows it can be done.
